I'm still amazed by the state of that industry. Why paying for an eBook for nearly the same price as a printed book gives you a file you don't own and you can't use, while piracy gives you a file you can use like an actual book?
When buying a book, I can read it where I want, in as many places I want, on as many couches I want, and I can even lend it to a friend. And that's legal.
Wasn't technology supposed to make the future better?

Intel (for reasons known only to Intel) has released critical CPU bugfixes for Linux servers under a bizarre license that prevents distros from redistributing it.

@simon_brooke @buttpraxis yes, for example I had no idea that Scotland uses 15 jurors compared to England's 12...

@simon_brooke @buttpraxis strongly depends on the case. I got a domestic-turned-ugly, and after 3 days of evidence, they agreed terms and we all went home.
Interesting to see the system at work, but the case was desperately dull

@simon_brooke @cscottmills @iona @orbifx it's common in many European cities. I've seen it in Belgium, Czech Republic, and Switzerland, and heard of more.
Generally it's a few Euros, which *must* be paid direct to the hotel at the time of settling the bill. You can't pay it in advance, nor as part of any deal with a booking service such as Expedia etc. I believe that's to ensure the money *actually* goes to the local town...

My 2yo daughter is getting really good at assembling IKEA furniture with me.
I figure if I just do stuff like this with her, it will just never occur to her that screwdrivers might not be for girls.

I've been doing a lot of 'please don't post text as images, it's unfair to blind users', but like you say you get to feel you're being boring.
I think we should stick to it, though. It's part of making Mastodon a more civil, thoughful, welcoming environment.

I'm about to start a slippery slope of #Linux distro testing, I think procrastination has hit a new level.

Are you new and just giving mastodon a try? Are you worried that it isn't or won't get popular enough? Are you concerned that it might be unstable?
Never fear. The fediverse is older than you think. It has grown slowly, naturally, sustainably. The fediverse is not a startup. The fediverse will not change unexpectedly. The fediverse cannot go out of business. The fediverse is as healthy as we want it to be.

So @mike just pinged me to inform me that we missed Fosstodon's 1st birthday!
On 01st August we became 1 year old. As I understand it, that's quite old for a Mastodon instance. Hopefully it will be the first of many, as we go from strength to strength.

I think I've spent more time on Mastodon today than the total for the last few weeks. The new influx is great, but I've got zero chance of keeping up now... scaling is a nice problem to have I guess :)

@bjoern @kev I just got an Onyx Boox ereader. It's... okay. Gets the job done, runs pretty much stock Android. Calibre detects it, so I'm happy :)
