Oh crap. I just bricked my package manager - I'm getting a load of dependency errors that I can't bypass. Already spent 30 mins messing around with it; it will be quicker to reinstall my OS I think.
@codesections@tdemin Win 10 is very different, but once you get used to it, it's pretty good. They have made it more like other OS where control panel has been replaced with settings, however, control panel is still there too. It's they've done have the job - it's very confusing,
Also, having a local account instead of one that's linked to Microsoft is very convoluted.
Just a reminder folks: we've now got our community hub up and running. It's got a community blog, our CoC, details on how to support Fosstodon, details about our team, and more.
@colomar@bobstechsite I think there does need to be a yard stick by which to measure everyone by. Otherwise, how will students know how they're doing or what to improve on?
@colomar there's no way in hell that I would have picked maths had I had the choice - that was mainly because I was rubbish at it, and therefore had no interest in it.
As you quite rightly said though, that could have been completely different had it been pitched to me in a way I found more enjoyable.
@colomar@measlytwerp@outkine@mooshoe if we went down that route, I think we would end up with a bias towards things that are perceived as more fun - Physical Education, design technology, IT and the more "boring" subjects will end up being under subscribed.
I do think that the education system requires dramatic reform. Students should learn more life skills IMO; how to manage finances, how to get a mortgage, taxes etc.
This is all incredibly important stuff that simply isn't taught.
@colomar@measlytwerp@outkine@mooshoe hmm I'm not sure if I agree with the "learn what you want" principle. Maybe at the latter stages of school, but not early on.
Thing is, kids don't know what they don't know. They don't know what they're interested in - for example, I didn't know I loved biology until I was forced to study it in high school.
Secondly, people still need to have core skills that are interdependent. Programming can be useless without maths, for example.
