    Library with overdue fees upfront is exactly how I have treated bookstores. It has saved me a lot of money. :-D

    @lilithsaintcrow @TheGibson I miss bookstores. They're like libraries where you pay all your overdue fines up front, and never have to bring the book back.

    Luckily I've always gotten a lot of mileage from used bookstores, and those still manage to exist.

    Still, I think a bookstore in every mall would encourage people to pick up a book every now and again. Seems like that's a good thing.

    @vertigo @daremo Wow! I had no idda. "The assembler was fully integrated into the BASIC interpreter and shared variables with it, which could be included between the [ and ] characters, saved via *SAVE and *LOAD, and called via the CALL or USR commands. This allowed developers to write not just assembly language code, but also BASIC code to emit assembly language, making it possible to use code-generation techniques and even write simple compilers in BASIC.'

    The story of the competition between MS-DOS and DR-DOS is quite interesting. Microsoft specifically tweaked Windows' code so it wouldn't run on DR-DOS, even if there were no technical limitations for it.

    There was a millionaire lawsuit and Microsoft settled out of court.

    @hhardy01 If he had said he was sorry he *wouldn't* give her the hearing she deserved, he would have come of about ten times as sincere as he comes off saying he *couldn't* do it for her. He is implying that he was a helpless cog in the machinery and is not really providing an apology at all.

    Dude, you were the chair of the committee holding the hearings. I call BS.

    "Mr. Biden has yet to apologize to Anita Hill even though he said last month that he regrets that “he couldn’t give her the kind of hearing she deserved” — a reference that seemed to play down his powerful role as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee when Ms. Hill testified at Justice Clarence Thomas’s confirmation hearing in 1991 that he had sexually harassed her."

    To elaborate on this, here's an algorithm how to DDoS someone and break the Matrix network at the same time:

    * Get a domain
    * Get a wildcard certificate
    * Spawn a stripped down instance with $randomname.yourdomain.org that can only talk to matrix.org.
    * Send a join to #matrix:matrix.org
    * Redirect $randomname.yourdomain.org to your target you want to DDoS
    * Kill the instance, repeat with another $randomname

    Now 2000 - 5000 servers will constantly hammer your target with TLS handshakes.

    I feel like not enough people focus on the fact that Germany wants to outlaw hosting Tor servers. A significant amount of Tor is hosted from Germany, but more importantly, if Germany outlaws it, many other countries that so far were afraid to do so will follow suite. All intelligence agencies despise Tor and lobby their governments to shut it down. It's a slippery slope.
