I'm weird, but my main requirement in a client is that I never miss anything. That means remembering my positions in each timeline and paginating correctly. There's only one client for Android that I'm aware of that does this - #AndStatus. Until recently, anyway. About a month ago it started forgetting media, jumping position on sync, and today I discovered the combined view for multiple instances gets confused and leaves hours-long gaps in my home timelines. So now there are zero.

This is the sort of stuff #ActivityPub is supposed to be good at, but it's still pleasantly surprising when it works. It probably won't take the place of my RSS reader any time soon, though being able to comment on blog posts via the Mastodon UI would be an improvement...

While I've had trouble following #plume users via the plume interface, I've discovered two interesting things about trying to follow plume stuff from #mastodon:
1. Paste a plume user's profile URL into the mastodon search box, and you can follow the user.
2. Plume posts can be in categories. You can paste the URL of a category into the mastodon search box and follow any new posts in that category. For example, this #tokipona category: https://plume.mastodon.host/~/TokiPonaAConlangAndItsSpeakers

1. infinite popups on the mac about broken python/psql
2. try to fix with brew upgrade
3. all tests fail with error about missing "*_old" table.
4. find that new sqlite3 breaks django
4. try to install old sqlite3
5. github chokes when browsing the homebrew repo
6. clone entire homebrew repo for five minutes
7. finally install and pin old sqlite3 (via URL because homebrew)8. months from now try to remember how to unpin sqlite3 because of new fun incompatibilities.

@garbados this stuff is particularly hard and poorly documented, though. You're not the only one; @deutrino and I have been working on a similar project for almost two months and are just now starting to have an inkling of confidence in our understanding of the whole thing.

@djsundog looking forward to this. I wonder if it's possible to dump the firmware?

@djsundog Yeah, more than one feedback that says the 512GB ones are actually 30GB with firmware to report the wrong size. It's a classic scam, but eBay's feedback system doesn't reward people for reporting scams. Scam sellers wait until the last minute to give their own feedback and punish you for giving negative feedback with negative feedback of their own...

Much more complicated model for this newbie: a drum trigger clip. It's for an #electronics project - sound-reactive RGB LED strips for my #SambaReggae band. This holds a piezo sensor against the drum head; an #arduino clone will read that and decide what lights to flash for how long. I'm #3DPrinting the first attempt now.
The hardest part? The hole for the piezo's wire, which goes through the arm at an angle not perpendicular to any edge.

@starbreaker More write.as instances might help. But that's very early-stages, too, and anybody but power users are going to be confused about how that app integrates with the fediverse, and the fediverse is where the community is...

@deadsuperhero I am, in fact, working on such a project. But it is very long-term and will be done long after the community has decided where to resettle.

Really, #mastodon's primary use is as a high-volume shitpost platform.
Which is too bad, because I'm not really a fan of shitposts.

Mastodon isn't a great replacement for #tumblr. It's far more ephemeral, it's terrible for browsing historical posts, the media uploading capability is just barely functional, and discovery is non-existent.
Tumblr was for blogging, not microblogging. The UX was awful and the community worked around it, but it did some things the community wanted particularly well.
They'll jump to another corporate platform because nothing in the #Fediverse is both a good fit and visible enough to draw them.

@polymerwitch you probably already know, but check the melatonin dose. Overdosing is extremely common and can cause rebound insomnia. (I don't mean to preach, I was doing it wrong for years...)

A non-federating (or outbox-only) instance that you can log into via oauth from any other instance, which only has the local timeline. For topical chat.

@deutrino Another behavior check: are you able to reblog my original 'Private Test' toot? It might or might not show up in the context menu, but I'm also curious if the API checks. For that I've been using Firefox's "edit and resend" in the Network tab of the Dev tools to edit a different reblog request with a new ID.
