Someone making money with it--it isn't what motivates you, but it is something you tolerate?
I ask because occasionally we see someone who release stuff that is *almost* open source, but doesn't carry this commercial tolerance.

@enkiv2 Right now I have 900 package sinstalled on my Arch laptop.
I can't imagine how I could possibly review each of them for quality and malice, figure out the build flags, and then keep track of the updates.
Also, most of my strong opinions align with those of Arch maintainers. Some don't. But I don't mind. For me it has the best cost/benefit ratio I've seen so far.
I always felt like snappy/flatpak/appimage were stupid ideas, but didn't exactly know why.
Then someone wrote this article

and suddenly it all makes sense.
Cheaper textbooks and better access for higher ed students with OpenStax https://opensource.com/article/18/6/openstax-open-textbook
I'd say some combination that includes transparency and fluid delegation.
Just realized I didn't write my #introduction yet! Does it count as #newaccount? 😜
Gen-Xer born in #Mexico; since kid I was a #computer #nerd and liked #anime and #scifi, so it was logical I'd eventually discover the #cyberpunk genre (#ghostintheshell, #akira, #neuromancer, #bubblegumcrisis, #parasitedolls, #lain...)
Aside from that I've done #opensource and #freesoftware; have gnu/#Linux on my PC and recently I discovered #decentralization.
Currently #amwriting a scifi novel about #AI and #androids.
I tried to create a MySpace account but the (Google) captcha is broken.
The hour after the year ends in an elementary school is an odd time for teachers. We wander hallways, chatting and glancing about, as if searching the whereabouts of our students. But busses have left. Kids are gone. Forgotten projects line the hallway floors. Locker doors swing wide open. Scattered pencils, pens, crayons, erasers cover the floor like used confetti after a parade. Every day, we had #smallstories in this space. The sudden silence is both welcome, and not. The heart remembers.
.@Blender's videos on #YouTube have now come back, but they are also being told by Google/YT that they HAVE to monetise them. #Blender are considering refusing, which presumably would mean the videos being taken down again:
https://www.blender.org/media-exposure/youtube-blocks-blender-videos-worldwide/
Whatever they once stood for, #Google's aim now is exploiting their users' content for maximum profit.
If you don't want your videos to be exploited, it is important to switch to an independent alternative:
So if you wonder why Evangelical Christians follow preachers who are so obviously full of shit, consider that perhaps it is because they themselves are so obviously full of shit. Being full of shit is fundamental to their culture, and birds of a feather flock together.
☹️
Soooo, there's this whole ancient thread about how RMS disses on TCL in favor of guile.
I find it an illuminating basis for comparing RMS getting riled up about a tech thing almost totally outside the context of user freedom, almost completely about what we might call "code smell" programming aesthetics.
Don't know if you've seen it, and I don't know that I'd recommend it if you haven't. These sort of online brawls are a kind of acquired taste.
I don't know that I've had such a thing, but now I wanna.
So many vids from that I need to see.
Is there a Canadian equivalent to the #DSA? It's not the #NDP. They're not a movement in any meaningful sense and tend not to do much outside the election cycle. But, hey, if you want to feel like nothing more than a source of donations for a political party, join the NDP! They often send multiple fundraising emails PER DAY.
I sometimes toy with the idea of getting involved with the #Communist Party, but they're too much on the fringes to make much meaningful impact at the present.
@freakazoid @enkiv2
I've seen kids reject learning python because the teacher was introducing them to pygame and they perceived it as a language for games. Was literally looked down upon as a toy.
The problem of branding combined with sociological phenomena (elitism etc) is complex and fascinating. Model view culture had a great piece exploring some of the nuances about how languages are perceived https://modelviewculture.com/pieces/c-is-manly-python-is-for-n00bs-how-false-stereotypes-turn-into-technical-truths
But weird that these motivations manifest even early in childhood.

@rysiek for starters.
I took a step back from some free software advocacy work when I realized the OS we were trying to help people with was getting pigeonholed as something only good for charity work on cast-off machines.
