yeah, that seems like a great reason to ban an instance.

@Gargron backscatter radiation is a proven way to do it in theory, but have my doubts that it could work in a real wifi network (eg with WPA2)

@Tanuki i think that article is mostly bunk. capital isn’t raised by trading stocks mature enough to be indexed, and the computers do a much better job of allocating capital in those cases.
speculation is what grows young companies, and speculators don’t buy index funds! ironically, buying an index fund usually plays out better long term than speculation (unless you speculated on say bitcoin two years ago)

Indeed. Both GNU social and Mastodon (especially with -hardened) have all of the necessary tools to contain/quarantine the outage/callout culture people. Instead, it's a human problem, as always.

Safe space culture on Mastodon has very little to do with safety, and instead has been transformed into a culture of spaces ruled by outrage culture.
There are a *few* safe spaces that are truly safe, such as @vahnj's excellent work in that area, but overall most instance admins ignore Mastodon's filtering capabilities and go into outrage mode.
I blame lack of experience, a lot of these admins are getting power for the first time and they have no idea how to wield it.
A real safe space is meant to be a place where you can explore ideas without having harassment.
Criticism is both allowed and *encouraged* in real safe spaces, so that one may learn from the critique. To be clear, the safe spaces of outrage culture have nothing to do with safety, and when a Mastodon instance admin declares that we must implement a global blockade on another instance in the name of safety, you should probably look very carefully for actual evidence to support that position.

It's not, and to be clear I'm not talking about the advisory privacy attributes.
ActivityPub and OStatus use wildly different authentication schemes, HTTP Signatures vs. Salmon. Salmon is the state of the art of approximately 10 years ago when identi.ca was a thing.
(Yes, I'm aware that Mastodon uses HTTP Signatures where possible with OStatus, it has to still cope with servers that do not use HTTP sigs.)

I never saw any such advocacy.
Are you implying that advocacy for free expression is somehow enabling Nazis? I mean, block who you want to, but I don't buy into that position.
Groups other than Nazis benefit from free expression, such as literally everybody in the fediverse.
Instances can and should block content that is not acceptable in their local community however, including but not limited to Nazi content, but the ability to *publish* should not be restricted.
In other words, if you don't want the content in your space, use the appropriate tools to not allow it to be in your space, moderation *is* speech and should also be protected equally with publishing.

the moderation tools in default mastodon are not useful for creating true safe spaces. in fact, in some ways they are deficient verses GNU social.

ActivityPub is really the future and OStatus as it presently stands is really the past honestly.
I don’t really have much opinion on GNU social but I suspect it won’t be maintained well enough to keep up.
I fear strongly that the mastodon.technology admin has done some major damage here in terms of moving away from OStatus and onto more secure ActivityPub.

my problem is that OStatus is a disaster of a protocol and gnu social isn’t likely to ever be upgraded to use activitypub (after all the guy who made gnu social started a new project after being unhappy with gnu social codebase).
Roy’s frustration is legitimate but the end result is one that likely leaves the federated web worse off, because it’s more instances that do not use ActivityPub, which has a much better security posture than OStatus.
