By far the biggest threat to life on this planet is Capitalism. Other economic systems might require mass industrialisation, but what makes Capitalism so unique in this regard is the engine that drives it: Growth for growth's sake.

The need for ever-larger profit margins, ever expanding markets, ever higher GDP. All of our planet must be colonised, disrupted and turned into commodities, even past the point of irreversible destruction. If you care about the planet, you can't be a Capitalist.

@boblmartens @kev @mike Yes, I'd also like to take the opportunity to thank the admins for their work. I don't know how much managing of users / new accounts goes on, but the end result has, in all my experience, been a sensible and positive environment. Even the fed TL is cleaner than on other servers, though I don't know how much of that is down to my larger blocklist on Fosstodon. Good work, guys 💪😀👍

Our admin, @mike had a great idea - to open up the Fosstodon Hub to our users, so they can contribute blog posts.

Maybe you want to talk about a project you're interested in, or something you're working on, or maybe just tell people why you use FOSS in a more long-form fashion.

Think of it kinda like a mini-medium for Fosstodon users.

This post is to gauge interest before we start developing something. Would anyone be interested in contributing to, or consuming, such content?

@codesections @fosstodon I've recently been thinking that there is a gap in my experience of the fediverse. Short and quickly lost snippets of communication are useful, but longer and longer-lasting posts are also needed. You've basically given structure to ponderings I haven't, until now, been able to properly formulate.

@gwmngilfen That was a major push factor when I switched from Messenger, along with the obvious. Plus the ads were tailored to what I was messaging people about — it was definitely using my private messages to create a "personalised ad experience" PR whatever shit they call it. I literally have never been interested by an ad in my life. Never felt the need to click through to the site is putting it in front of me. Do they actually make people money???

@ajroach42 I'd probably take a look. AFAIK #peertube needs more content, so something like that could draw awareness to #peertube, and help to improve the content available.

I still don’t actually know how the internet works

But it’s not working for me the way I need it. It’s not working the way a lot of people need it

There seems to be some kind of reverse Moore’s Law for net speeds in that with every doubling of speed, there’s a halving of throughput of actual, useful, information

Botnets, trackers, spammers, and other data parasites are saturating available bandwidth faster than speeds can improve

@gwmngilfen I don't know if I'd go so far as to do that, but I'm enjoying the alternatives to Messenger. Though using an obscure, niche IM doesn't do me any favours when I try to communicate with friends, as they're all in silos and don't care. Just gotta keep hoping that if I bug them enough then they'll switch 😁

@kev Yeah, that sums it up. There were a few people I communicated with through Twitter, but mostly I just followed brands, since there's so much of that on Twitter.

@kev Yeah, I tried to explain it to a friend and the understanding he came to was, "So it's like a shitty version of Reddit where you have to create an account for every subreddit?". I gave up in the end.

@gwmngilfen I believe so. I set any conversations on Riot to be encrypted, and it seems to work fine. I've only recently started using it though, and I haven't done any tests to see how well it works. There's a warning saying the encryption is still beta and may not work or something, but I haven't had any issues with it so far.

@Matter That's surprising. I thought Lineage's aim was to create a fork of Android that's open source and without Google. I know you can use Gapps, but I thought that option was to appeal to a wider audience. What are they trying to achieve then? Just to give people a different option?
