Lisp and Haskell people have both smugly believed their language is the Right Language but soon Alexis King's Hackett will solve the whole debate by doing both at once (as long as space and time are not consumed by the ensuing smugularity) https://lexi-lambda.github.io/tags/hackett.html http://docs.racket-lang.org/hackett/index.html

To the lisp / scheme curious:

I'd suggest installing Racket, opening DrRacket and going through this tutorial: http://docs.racket-lang.org/quick/

You'll be coding fun things in mere minutes... even with no lisp or even *any* programming experience!

Writing a web application is only a few lines away: http://docs.racket-lang.org/continue/index.html

Try it! I promise you'll have fun!

I called my senators and asked them to overturn today's disastrous ruling by the FCC https://www.battleforthenet.com/

You should too! The fediverse is a place full of folks who are well informed about how critical net neutrality is to the internet as a democratic institution, as it was designed to exist. Make your voice heard!

So a few months ago I said something like "I wonder if @bkurdali and @rowan know each other" but both of them were like "Oh I don't really talk to people" but I have this feeling based by this call I just had with Bassam that it turns out that they might work in the same coworking space ;)

    Maybe? Maybe?

Okay, json-ld expander ported to Racket... mostly. Gotta fix a few issues but we're off to a good start ;)

@seanl I agree that limitations can buy a lot. It's just kindof a bummer, because I'm not sure how to do something like the kind of things I demonstrate on the live MUD hacking on https://www.gnu.org/software/8sync/

In that demo I could change the world around me in response to other players' suggestions. Afaict this wouldn't be possible in Racket.

@bob @vertigo @h Indeed, the hash of the original block of Bitcoin was quoting an article about the 2008 crisis as caused by crazy speculation. And here we are.

But IMO the speculation part is actually a separate issue to analyze than the energy consumption issue. They're both concerns, but should be analyzed individually.

@craigmaloney Well, that's the problem.. Guile keeps optimizing all the useful variables away by the time you try to look at them ;) So yeah...

The *best* debugging experience I've ever had is with Slime + SBCL. Holy shit nothing comes close.

I've liked a lot of things in Racket but, and i know why they did it, but I really do not enjoy using Racket's object (or struct) systems as much as GOOPS

@jessiscah24 Hm... headline is a bit misleading because it's not enabled and it seems believable that this was for debugging given the domain.

Still, hard to know or trust things that come from closed development models

For metaobject protocol like stuff, Guile has GOOPS and Racket has Swindle (as a separate package), but unfortunately it looks like Swindle's author is no longer a fan of its core designs https://www.reddit.com/r/Racket/comments/2crihw/why_is_swindle_hidden_away/

@maiyannah @lnxw48a1 @bob @verius I agree that mega-nodes are problematic but I don't agree that they're as bad and certainly aren't *worse* than twitter. Twitter will take you down for a ToS violation even for bridging content. Mastodon devs are actively interested in allowing users to more easily migrate (even if that's not nearly there).

We absolutely need to be on our toes about meganodes tho. Particularly filtering on an instance level as a general solution emphasizes eventual centrality.

BTW if you like the work I'm doing on things like ActivityPub, maybe consider joining https://www.patreon.com/cwebber

To be clear: I'm not in a financial danger, I do have income from contracting, and I love my clients. However, I more or less paid for most of ActivityPub's specification work myself, and prioritizing community things is easier when I have to worry about contracting less.

Thanks everyone who's supporting already :)

Oh btw, since there's a publishing moratorium due to Holidaze (TM) move to Recommendation won't happen until early 2018. Santa will hopefully come late this year. ;)
