I just want to watch Mormons and Jehovahs Witnesses try to convert each other nonstop. A never-ending loop of incompatible ideas and quiet, irritated politeness.

@Elizafox How about "the cost of getting off of welfare is not higher than the cost of staying on it?"
Though anecdotal, I have heard many stories of people who try to get back into the workforce, only to realize they're making $9 an hour somewhere, while their living expenses require significantly more than that.

@nightpool That's not its primary function, though. Social networking is peripheral to its true core feature, which is fundraising. If you're talking about creators communicating with their supporters, sure, that's a social networking function. But the functionality is not 1:1 between creators and their supporters, unlike Twitter/Tumblr/Facebook/et al.
Building it the other way around also has some problematic implications, though I'll readily admit the devil is in the details.

@nightpool To be fair, a lot of social media platforms are somewhat ignorant of fundraising / donation features. Facebook only really started experimenting with this in their production environment within the last year or so, and it's largely in reaction to GoFundMe.
I'd expect that for most social platforms, it's not even on their radar.

This is the second time this has happened. :(

@inmysocks I was under the impression that whole numbers were "1, 2, 3, 4", whereas integers are "1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4"?
Maybe I'm completely wrong and have been living a lie for most of my life.

@msh @cwebber No apology necessary! I'm considering my options before I start.
Most of my experience so far has been done with #Rails. I like the framework a lot, and enjoy it for what it is, but I'd like to experiment with an experience that is comparable.
At the same time, though, I'm curious whether a more bare-bones approach may force me to write a cleaner, neater application that doesn't rely on a huge amount of extra junk that one comes to expect in a framework.

@cwebber To clarify: I was under the impression that Mediagoblin was bespoke, and did not leverage a Python framework.

Hey @cwebber , if I wanted to write a web app in #Python, is it better to use #Django, or is it more worthwhile to write everything yourself?
I thought #mediagoblin did this, and frankly I cannot tell whether it even uses a Python framework.
