Brain-melting realization that this means that writing decent documentation, tutorials and FAQs is totally Cyberpunk behavior.

Used my recovery day to do a little geek tinkering, and now my calendar and contact list are being served up to my phone via nextcloud rather than Google.

I like to post about this stuff not just because it interests me, but I feel like people need to hear that these sorts of privacy enhancing shenanigans are possible for less technical users.

I'm not an IT person. At best I'm an enthusiast that can read documentation. I got it done, maybe you can too.

In an era defined by the digital equivalent of everything you say being on the "permanent record", I can see how something supposedly ephemeral would be appealing.

Problem is, they are only short lived for the user.

I don't know what's scarier now, losing the past to /dev/null or having intentionally deleted things resurface later.

I need to be able to embed the content on webpages, view on mobile and do all those things #YouTube has trained us to take for granted.

I've been thinking about moving my work to archive.org for the content that has no copyright encumberment. I do have some videos with mixed licenses, so sadly that's not an option for everything.

I see this in new projects. Where it confuses me is in established projects where someone decides their difficult to use tool is a mark of pride.

Usability is a valid thing to consider in a tool intended to be used.

Now that the holiday shows are done, I finally get a few days to putter around. Looking forward to finishing unpacking, hanging some art and working on a backlog of to-do list items.

It's this moment where I breathe and remember that these quiet moments don't mean anything scary. They are simply the silences between the notes.

It reminds me of the idea if musical instruments during the early 1900s.

A national steel guitar was fifteen dollars in the Sears catalog. That equates to about 1500 now, and was beyond even the fanciful dreams of the poor.

The result was blues abd roots musicians everywhere making their own instruments. Diddley bows, cigar box guitars and the like.

All born out of necessity, because in the end the music and it's making were more important than their means.

Human connection is the point of all of this. In the event of that conversation being stifled, we find another way.

Perhaps not better or worse, simply different.

Anyone know of a #matrix.org command line client that supports end to end encryption? I love the nostalgia hit of playing with weechat, but I was hoping for something more future proof.

Playing Scrooge is a wonderful adventure.

Teaching kids that a grumpy character can be approachable and playful was easier than I expected, I suspect in large part because Isaac Young's insufferably positive snowman provided such lovely contrast.

The highlight of the day was when an adorable child walked up to us, mocked my grumpy body language and loudly said, "Mr. Scrooge, you need to lighten up!"

And so he did. <3
