@gdsk3k Luckily, the growing pains the mastoverse was having back in the early days (instances with shoddy hardware, instances disappearing) have largely gone away now. Most instances by this point are established and have been around a while.

And with http://masto.host, pretty much anybody can start a mastodon community, running on good hardware (that someone else is taking care of!).

Let's all agree to stop calling them Mastodon "instances" and start calling them Mastodon "addresses". I think it'll be much easier for new users to grasp the concept if we compare it to email -- something most people are familiar with, and with which Mastodon shares similarity.

@staticsafe After getting hacked about five years ago through a plugin, I've run basically plugin-free since then. If it's not a feature that's built-in to Wordpress itself, it just doesn't get done.

@ajroach42 The telescope helped show that the heavens weren't just celestial spheres, and the microscope helped prove illnesses weren't caused by malign spirits. Both of these things changed humanity amazingly.

I wonder if we'll ever make something that changes society as much as those two.

@ajroach42 Weird thought -- couldn't these just be progressive enhancements instead of right angles?

A telephone is just a faster letter.

Radio/TV -- pretty/noisy books.

Automobiles -- horses that cost more and are more expensive to feed.

None of the above really changed how we treat each other.

For a full-on right angle, I think something like the telescope or the microscope changed society much much more.
