@koenaro @remotenemesis i have a couple of very short scripts i wind up using a surprising amount for this:

    https://code.p1k3.com/gitea/brennen/bpb-kit/src/branch/master/home/bin/edit-clipboard

    https://code.p1k3.com/gitea/brennen/bpb-kit/src/branch/master/home/bin/edit-clipboard-gvim

ctrl-x to cut, run edit-clipboard-gvim, do some edits, :wq, ctrl-v to paste.

now that i think about it, a hotkey really wouldn't be a bad idea... i miss when i had a browser plugin that'd just do this without a lot of fuss.

@earthtopus @t54r4n1 well, anyhow, i'm no joke off at this very moment to haul about 40 lbs of crap to the recycling depot. have a good day y'all.

@t54r4n1 @earthtopus that said, though i recycle diligently in accordance with the local norms, i'm reasonably confident that recycling is mostly a scam, or perhaps more accurately a sort of religious exercise to assuage our guilt over our massive personal garbage streams.

what we could really use is a society-wide effort at massively reducing the amount of packaging waste produced per household. which is of course a total non-starter, like most reforms that would have actual impact.

@t54r4n1 @earthtopus i have a perhaps weird view of this in that i grew up in a place where we literally put all the refuse in a large hole dug in the ground with an excavator. (in years where the water table was low and the hole not full of water, we were usually able to light the trash on fire, thus greatly increasing the holding capacity of the trash hole.)

and _then_ the 1990s happened and we all got steeped in the recycling propaganda. bit of conceptual shear there.

w.s. merwin has died. he was so prolific and had such a long working life that i've only ever read a small fraction of his output, but he left a mark on the way i think.

i can't even find my favorite poem of his - it had an image in it of seeing houses that aren't actually there. all i have is this kind of sense impression of it. i suppose that's mostly what a poet leaves, if anything: the memory of the shape of a transmitted experience.

@EveHasWords i often roast veggies / proteins in a cast iron pan in the oven, for whatever that's worth... one of the better low-effort meals i make, now that i think about it.

@djsundog @feonixrift yeah, i think my main objection to the original idea is that i'd want the password generated client-side, but then i personally don't let random sites run js by default, so some sort of escape hatch for that would be nice.

(whether those considerations matter also depends to some extent on if anything _else_ works without js, which these days is of course probably a no...)

@djsundog i would have to think about it pretty hard before implementing it, but i think i might not hate this approach.

@CarlCravens i know they think all this stuff is going to lead me to "engage" more and thus spend more money or something, but in reality what it's going to do is drive me to throw some hardware in a rack when i get around to finding someone who'll still rent me rackspace and stop using their service altogether.

not, i suppose, that this matters statistically. most people will just put up with it. but nobody _likes_ it.

@CarlCravens yeah, the simplicity and clarity of what DO had going on with their product initially was a big part of why i ever wanted to work for them in the first place, and knowing what was coming was part of why i left.

this behavior is especially sad and weird from service providers i'm _already giving money_. it's like guys, you got me already. i am on the hook. you charge my credit card, and over time i use you for more stuff

@Alonealastalovedalongthe yeah, it's bizarre. like, to be fair, the thing you're describing is kind of a norm across a _lot_ of different things online, maybe even most, but something about reddit's design has always been like a finely tuned machine for stoking flamewars.

i spent _years_ on there, and i don't totally regret it because i did learn a lot and hone some of my thinking, but mostly i was just being a giant asshole to people on the internet for an hour or two a day.

an astonishing number of people are devoting much of their working lives and their not inconsiderable intelligence to making all the software they touch iteratively more terrible.

in point of fact, willingness to do this seems to be more or less a condition of almost all software-related employment.

it often pays pretty good, but "demoralizing" doesn't begin to cover the long term effects of this kind of thing.

every month or two i open digitalocean's control panel for one reason or another, and almost invariably they've tacked on more 3rd-party trackware and CDNs since the last time. even with a dozen things blocked, it weighs in at 49 requests and about 8 _megabytes_ of stuff downloaded.
