@ella_kane I assume by "alts" you mean multiple online identities? Can you explain how you think they relate to moderating the flow of activity in online spaces? I guess I was thinking more of bounded spaces like web forums or Loomio groups, that rely to some degree on nurturing an ongoing community of participants, rather than networked media like the #fediverse where people can dip in and out of lots of different conversations.

Mastodon isn't a great replacement for #tumblr. It's far more ephemeral, it's terrible for browsing historical posts, the media uploading capability is just barely functional, and discovery is non-existent.

Tumblr was for blogging, not microblogging. The UX was awful and the community worked around it, but it did some things the community wanted particularly well.

They'll jump to another corporate platform because nothing in the #Fediverse is both a good fit and visible enough to draw them.

I'm elsewhere in the #fediverse too, by the way: @blog is my weblog posting its content here more or less regularly, powered by #pterotype plugin (thanks to @jdormit for the great work on that).

@andrioid I can't take credit for coining that one, I got it from my sister and brother-in-law, but I'll take credit for introducing it to the #fediverse ;) I try to use procrasti-work as an adaptive strategy, making myself do one set of jobs that do need to be done, by telling myself it means I can put off doing something I feel less motivated to do at that time.

@funkwhale Archive.org might also be approachable about providing hosting for an instance of #FunkWhale serving the #FMA collection - and potentially other libre music collections they hold - to the #fediverse. Again, the folks working on archiving the FMA seem like the best people to talk to.

@andrioid I agree. I'd have to admit I'm a chronic yak shaver, and it's only one of many forms of #ProcrastiWork I indulge in (arsing about on the #fediverse all day is another one ;) I'd say what whether or not that yak is worth shaving depends on how many people will benefit in future (including your future selves) from not that yak pre-shaved. If it's only useful to your current project, and there's a quicker solution, don't shave the yak. Otherwise, maybe it's worth it?

@wolftune just to be clear, I'm *not* saying it was pointless to discuss the pros and cons of NC licenses on the #fediverse at all. The exchange of opinions and links may have been helpful to any passers-by not already familiar with the subject. But I doubt you or I learned anything new from it. Whereas I believe that in another medium, the same debate could have been both less frustrating and more productive, allowing us to explore new aspects, or record the chains of argument more permanently.

In the next days, until 10/11 december i'll probably be very busy at work and IRL (with the 2 bands and the choir) so i probably be less active than usual. Just to inform you. 😉

@shatteredgears I've definitely seen people claim that people running online platforms cannot censor, because they define it as something only governments (ie "nation-states") can do. I think that argument is fair when applied to, say, a #fediverse instance, because any given instance has so little power to decide what gets heard. FB or YT? Not convinced.

@djsumdog CDNs are an interesting edge case. Arguably they are not a platform, but a signal booster, and that a #CDN deciding not to boost this or that signal (eg white supremacist sites) is like a #fediverse instance deciding not to federate with this or that instance (eg white supremacist instances). But I get that the relationships between the #BigTech platforms and CDNs muddy the waters. My view on this is still forming, and I'd be happy to see a counter-argument.
