I just read the phrase "stealing memes" and like... My brain.exe just kind of stopped working? Like, isn't the whole point of memes to share and remix and share and remix and share ... And I'm mostly referring to net memes/know your meme type shit, but that applies to the general cultural concept as well? Memes by definition are shared? W ha tttt th o ugh

@klaatu It is a dump site for sure. They release a macOS and then later they dump part of the sources in a new folder at os.a.c and that's it. Just throwing things over the wall, nothing more. IIRC that's what wore the OpenDarwin people out.

And still, it would be useful if somebody had the time and energy to make something of those things thrown over the wall. I'm not blaming a single soul of the billions of people who aren't doing it, especially those who already did it once, thank you so much for your contributions.

I'm still wondering whether PureDarwin Nano might be something worth spending a few weeks on. nixpkgs basically just needs XNU, libSystem.B (I'm not even sure why, but I think it does), launchd and something that makes networks and drives work (is that launchd too, and some scripts?) and then it can take over from there.

Even cooler would be to tie together the bare bones, https://github.com/LnL7/nix-darwin and nixpkgs to make basically a NixOS/Darwin.

macOS 10.13.5 is Darwin 17.5, but it's unclear that Darwin is even really a thing outside Apple's internal release process, so I don't know what is the thing that is being versioned from the perspective of us outsiders.

https://opensource.apple.com/release/macos-10133.html is just a bunch of things that all have their own versioning, nothing is versioned either 17.3 nor 13.3. `uname -r` puts out the Darwin version, but I don't know where it picks it up.

@klaatu Yeah, I was sort of assuming they were moving along just fine until I checked a while ago, and they apparently haven't had much happen for at least two years.

And the versioning is more complicated than I realized. I thought Darwin 9 would correspond to OSX 10.9, but apparently 10.9 was already Darwin 13, so PD is even farther behind than it first seemed.

On the other hand, people seem to be active on the wiki, so I have no clue as to the real status of things.

    @aven @moonman @delores It's clear which side you're on. :-)

I think both sides are right and wrong.

The outcomes side lately have mistaken a proxy (inequality of outcomes may be an indicator of discrimination) for reality (inequality of outcomes is discrimination).

The opportunity side as a counterreaction are throwing the proxy out the window and resort to anecdotes, "I never experienced discrimination therefore it doesn't exist, neither did my friends in the top layer of the project structure", they reject that identity role models and excluding language may be things, and most stupidly, believe that tough skin is a predictor or component of technical excellence. Actually, maybe they are also mistaking a proxy for reality, confidence is competence.

@jamey @efraim No. Nix has a culture/idiom of strong decoupling and inversion of control, which enables overrides.

The Guix idiom is instead modification through inheritance. It's easier to wrap your head around, but as you observe, it makes it harder for the user to modify the package tree from the outside.

@jordigh @inspectorcaracal Yes. And people fear that those people who advocate for the CoC are going to be able to advance their agenda when framing the CoC. That's in addition to those people often being considered newcomers or even outsiders.

A CoC merely encoding the status quo isn't very exciting to advocate, so probably the people who are for the CoC *also* believe they will have a stronger say than tre incumbent project culture.

Alright then, there is no way around, if no wonder happens, the #tchncs :tchncs: #matrix :matrix: server will shutdown at the end of next month.
if you are using this server, please consider moving.

As matrix is a very exception in its hardwareneeds, don't worry, there is no further tchncs service in danger.
I wrote this in a longer message here: https://chat.tchncs.de/#/room/#tchncs:tchncs.de

@h Personally I'm super excited about the future right now. e.g.

What about uberizing a corporation ? Why do you need explicit manager roles if you can make a bug tracker which allows tenders, bids, contracts and payment of credits... Let people elect their bosses or work independent. Can it then be run democratically ?

Is a prediction market effectively a superintelligence ?
When the singularity comes, maybe it's just going to be the derivatives market...

    etc...

Prediction: EU leaders have committed a grave strategic error for which they will pay dearly.

    Past few weeks:
    * Italy voted, elected right wing anti-EU Northern League and leftist anti-EU 5 Star Movement got majority, so they need to propose a government...
    * Documents leaked showing plan to demand 180bn€ loan forgiveness from EU, markets drop.
    * Northern and M5S promise they won't really do that

@partridge Yes. Noise used to be a services-less Signal, but now it's just Signal minus the name.

Moxie probably still won't allow them to call it Signal if they compile it for their F-Droid, but I wonder if "temporary" means they think they can convince him otherwise.
