Mastodon is a great tool, and surely makes it easier, and empowers you to block and filter out Nazis, report and pressure admnis to do PUNT THE NAZIS and also to vote with your feet to instances where admins do the right thing... which is BEATING THE FUCK OUT OF NAZIS rather than making money from them, like on that other site.
End of the day, it's still going to come down to people doing the right thing.

@Gargron Bans fucking Nazis. @Gargron is doing a good thing, period. He could do some things better sure, but this Nazi-banning thing is good.
All other admins banning Nazis are doing the right thing. Period.
There is no tool, technology, AI, argument, engineering that can solve, or manage Nazis and make them go away, rn. It is a moral decision, and it comes down, at least for now, to admins making the right decision to BAN TREBUCHET SMASH THE FUCK out of FUCKING NAZIS.

Nazis are bad. Punch Nazis. Ban Nazis. Do not negotiate with Nazis. Ban bad faith trolls dropping Nazi garbage-juice comments. Nazis need public debates to spread their plague idealogy. Deplatform Nazis, unlike the birdsite, that profits from propagating fascism, or anything that gets eyeballs, even if it kills people.
Have personal empathetic heart-to-heart conversations with people who believe wrong stuff *in private* in good faith as you can manage.

Okay so this is a new demo where I've fully implemented the first of two and a half encounters with the poltergeist character named Warnerus.
I've gone from 5300 words to 8000 words, but some of this is attributed to repeated but slightly different dialogue critical to the flavor dynamic of the different races and stages of the encounter.
To reach it, look for the Creek and investigate. Also theres a full event with the Green Man earlier on.

As a person of color, I think Mastodon, generally, has been a way greater place than Twitter as far as harassment and the like. I also think the way the Mastodon tool is setup (decentralized, good moderation curation tools, not run as a capitalist corporation) is great.
That said, 'The Street Finds Its Own Uses For Tools', as some old author guy once said. It's hard to say what Mastodon will look like if/when it gets to user counts near Twitter's. I am hopeful, though.

@TZaple Yeah, it remains managable, for the moment. When you have hundreds of millions of accounts, tens, hundreds of thousands of accounts created per day, bot influx, the game for Mastodon will change, and it will be tested. (Not just @Gargron, everyone)
One Mastodon advantage is the decentralized nature. What may occur is a 'right.town' or something where they *don't* kick hate speech etc.. Sucks, but better'n Twitter. That's something implicit to Mastodon tech to its benefit.

The DARPA military engineers were probably never considered lolcat pictures or megacorporations growing larger than nation states when they strung Cheyenne and Pentagon mainframes together for robustness in the face of nuclear strike. I'm guessing Youtube garage-band-startup dudes didn't think nutso conspiracy vids would be the #1 thing years later.
Mastodon can be better, but as I said before, it will take human curation (implicitly human moral choices), and that at scale will be a challenge

The part about 'what are you willing to sacrifice' rings so true. 'Success', 'recognition', 'fame', vs doing the right thing will always be at odds. Believing you can take fundamentally moral choices and airbrush, cover up, box-off, manage, fix with markets, or solve with technology & ingenuity alone is the crux of America's spiritual and socio-political-economic descent. You could not merely elect, invent, or think the New Deal into reality. It took sacrifice, up to and including some lives.
